Facebook's e-mail system can only reach other people who have signed  
up for Facebook, and who you've mutually identified as a friend. Yet  
surveys suggest (*) that amongst younger people, Facebook and other  
social networking sites have completely usurped the purpose of e-mail,  
and that young people perceive e-mail as something that old people use.

But clearly this is impossible, so it cannot have happened.

The spammers are trying to work on cracking Facebook, of course.
